Buchanan, Tenn.—The Henry County High School Fishing Team of Shawn Burkhart and Gavin Gordon came in second place in the Bassmaster National High School championship with a total weight of 42 pounds and 15 ounces.
It was a spectacular finish for a fishing team that was organized just a few weeks ago, competing in their first national championship.
The Burkhart/Gordon team came in second to winners Tommy Floyd Jr. and James Gibbons of South Florence High School, Alabama.
It was a hard-fought battle that included a day off Friday due to the severe thunderstorms that blew through our area.
During the weigh-in Saturday afternoon at Paris Landing State Park, both Burkhart and Gordon thanked the local community and said they felt good about their finish. Their team came in to today in second place and maintained that through the day.
A large crowd was on hand for the final weigh-in.
The top team won $5,000 in scholarship money and were presented with $20,000 scholarships each to attend Bethel University in McKenzie and be on the Bethel Fishing Team, which is ranked No. 1 in the country.
Bethel Coach Garry Mason presented Floyd and Gibbons with the scholarship during the awards ceremony.
Burkhart and Gordon won $4,000 scholarships from Bass for their second place win. They caught a total 22 pounds 11 ounces Thursday and 20 pounds four ounces today.
