Story by WMUF Radio, Paris, Tennessee
Buchanan, Tenn.- Chad Pregracke, who was recognized as CNN’s Hero of the Year in 2013 for his work cleaning up the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers, is now bringing his barge based Living Lands and Waters efforts to the Tennessee River, which will include a stop to help clean up the river at Paris Landing scheduled for May 17-19th.
The Tennessee River Tour, sponsored by the Tennessee Valley Authority, will include educational workshops, river cleanups, open houses and other conservation based activities, all designed to make people aware of the value and importance of the Tennessee River.
Tammy, Chad’s wife and business manager, said the Tennessee River tour will serve the same basic purpose as the work done on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers, to raise awareness of the importance and impact of the resource, the ecology and the economy. She also said one of their missions is to highlight the work of local groups who are already engaged in environmental stewardship.
Pregracke stared contacting government agencies in his teens and decided by his early 20s to create Living Lands and Waters. The group has worked with over 60K volunteers to collect over 6 million pounds of debris from waterways.
During the stop at Paris Landing, there will be open house barge tours from 1-4pm along with river cleanup on Sunday May 17th. Monday May 18th workshops will be held from 9am to 2pm and the TN River Speaker Series will be featured that evening from 6:30pm-8pm. On Tuesday May 19th, more workshops will be held from 9am to 2pm.
Volunteers may register at http:livinglandsandwaters.org. For more information about the Living Land and Waters coming to Paris Landing visit www.tennesseerivertour.org.
