It's a perfect weekend for hay rides, chili pies, hot dogs, and hot cider.

Toss in a Civil War Battle reenactment,  some cannons firing, and an afternoon 1860s style tea party and it will become a truly memorable event.

You can find all that and more this weekend at Paris Landing at the ....

PARIS TN: Civil War living history encampment to return to Paris Landing State

History will come alive this weekend at Paris Landing in the fourth annual Battle of Paris Landing Re-enactment and Civil War Living History events.
Friday is Kids Day, with special events designed as hands-on history lessons, especially for children (and their parents or supervisors).
The learning and fun begins at 10 a.m.
The 19th Alabama Civilians will provide living history exhibitions of 1860s life.
Examples of the demonstrations and lessons are: handling a period long gun, learning to march and dressing in period uniforms, including that which a Civil War soldier would wear into battle.
Other demonstrations and hands-on activities are a battle field nurses’ tent, learning candle lighting techniques and dressing in period clothing.
There will also be a beekeeper demonstrating mid-19th century beekeeping techniques and discussing the importance of bees during the Civil War era.
Tamara Edwards of the Paris Landing Tourism League, which is sponsoring the weekend activities, said, “We are seeking to provide children attending the events, with serious and educationally sound lessons in their history.”
Saturdays and Sundays are very busy days with many activities and a lot of good eating for everyone: children and parents. Cannons will be fired every hour, cake walk dancing and hayrides will be available with period music provided by Clint and Amanda Sprague.
On both days, all day to dusk, a vendor camp will be in operation selling food: chili, hot cider, chili pies, hot dogs as well as souvenirs, art and relics.
From 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, there will be a chili cook-off. At noon, there will be a tea party in the large pavilion.
At 2 p.m., Civil War re-enactors will provide infantry, cavalry and artillery demonstrations.
At 10 a.m. Sunday, a church service will be celebrated in the large pavilion with a message by Chappy — aka Charles Morrison — from Porters Battery and music by Q&A.
At 2 p.m., there will be more infantry, calvary and artillery demonstrations by the Civil War re-enactors.
Edwards noted, “With this living and lively demonstration of period armaments, the weekend festivities will close. The League hopes the events will prove entertaining, but especially, educational for children and adults alike.”
All events and activities are free to the public.

National Public Lands Day - September 30, 2017

From Tennessee State Parks

HELPING HANDS FOR AMERICA'S LANDS

In honor of National Public Lands Day, Tennessee State Parks, Friends Groups and Tennessee State Natural Areas are hosting a variety of volunteer stewardship projects, hikes and interpretive programs for all ages. Last year, more than 1,000 people participated in this day of service. This year, we have a variety of events and service projects planned, including litter clean-ups, trail maintenance, hikes and even a few canoe floats. Events are being held at different times throughout the day and some parks are having multiple events. This is also an excellent opportunity for TN Promise Scholars to bank volunteer hours.
In recognizing the importance of building partnerships that combine a love of the outdoors and volunteering, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam has declared September 30, 2017 Tennessee Public Lands Day.

We appreciate and thank our many volunteers and Friends!
Please remember, schedules and events may change - contact the park or hike leader for more information or to confirm events.

Vietnam War Moving Wall Headed To Paris

Comrades Forever
"The Moving Wall" is the half-size replica of the Washington, DC Vietnam Veterans Memorial and has been touring the country for thirty plus years. When John Devitt attended the 1982 dedication in Washington, he felt the positive power of "The Wall." He vowed to share that experience with those who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington.
John, Norris Shears, Gerry Haver, and other Vietnam veteran volunteers built The Moving Wall. It went on display for the first time in Tyler, Texas in October of 1984. Two structures of The Moving Wall now travel the USA from April through November, spending about a week at each site.
Sponsor is any organization or group of individuals that wants The Moving Wall to visit their area and is willing to do the work to make the local arrangements as described in "Scheduling a Visit of The Moving Wall." Sponsors are frequently civic groups, schools, or veterans' organizations. Sponsoring normally requires months of planning by dozens of local volunteers.

The Paris/Henry County Chamber of Commerce began planning for the event years ago, making the request with the Moving Wall organizers that the local community be placed on the schedule

The Moving Wall will be placed at the Eiffel Tower Park, in the large field between the swimming pool and Memorial Park Cemetery. It’s handicapped accessible. There is plenty of parking there.

The Moving Wall must be staffed 24 hours a day for all five days and local veterans’ groups will be volunteering for that.

A public ceremony will open the Moving Wall August 31.

The Moving Wall was in our area in 2013, at Camden, and drew huge crowds.

For more information about The Moving Wall please visit: http://www.themovingwall.org/
