Vietnam War Moving Wall Headed To Paris

WENK/WTPR
22 hrs
Vietnam War Moving Wall Headed To Paris
By Shannon McFarlin WENK/WTPR News Director
Paris, Tenn.—The Vietnam War Moving Wall will be in Paris over Labor Day weekend, from August 31-September 4, and Paris-Henry County Chamber of Commerce Director Mark Johnson said, “We’re so proud to have the Moving Wall come to our community.”
The Moving Wall is the half-size replica of the Washington, D.C., Vietnam Veterans Memorial and has been touring the country for over 30 years. The Moving Wall was in our area in 2013, at Camden, and it drew huge crowds.
Johnson said, “It’s so appropriate that the Wall should come to Paris in this year, with the 100th anniversary of our National Guard unit and other military anniversaries. It’s an important year in the nation’s military history and in our military history. It’s special and exciting for us.”
The Chamber began planning for the event years ago, making the request with the Moving Wall organizers that the local community be placed on the schedule.
The Moving Wall will be placed at the Eiffel Tower Park, in the large field between the swimming pool and Memorial Park Cemetery. “It’s a perfect location for it,” Johnson said. “There will be plenty of solitude there. It’s removed from most of the activities of the park. It’s handicapped accessible. There is plenty of parking there.”
The Moving Wall must be staffed 24 hours a day for all five days and local veterans’ groups will be volunteering for that.
A public ceremony will open the Moving Wall August 31 and details will be announced later, Johnson said.
According to the Moving Wall schedule, it will be on display in Savannah, Tenn., September 7-11.

Free Smoke Alarms To Be Handed Out Saturday

WENK/WTPR
14 hrs
Free Smoke Alarms To Be Handed Out Saturday
Buchanan, Tenn.—A door-to-door smoke alarm campaign will be conducted Saturday in the Buchanan and Paris Landing area.
It will be held from noon until 4 p.m. and representatives of the Paris Landing Volunteer Fire Department and other emergency responders will partner with the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s office will be going door-to-door handing out the free smoke alarms.
In April, five family members were killed in a house fire in the Buchanan area.
Paris Landing Fire Chief Reggie Coles said, “We want to spend a few minutes educating our residents about the dangers of fire and offer them free smoke alarms, which we will install while we are there. The smoke alarms are furnished at no charge by the State Fire Marshal’s office. All emergency personnel will be in uniform and all civilian volunteers will have proper documentation with them.”
All emergency services organizations in Henry County, as well as the Red Cross, local dhurches, the Amvets and the American Legion have been invited.
Coles said, “We see this as an opportunity for us to come together as a community to help prevent any further loss of life due to fire.”
The Paris Landing Senior Citizens Center will be offering refreshments for everyone afterward.

FerrySTOC 8 - Coming Soon!

FerrySTOC 8

May 18-20, 2017

Paris Landing State Park
By Randy Collins

FerrySTOC 8 – Bringing long distance, cross country riders to the Paris Landing area as a base for local area riding and group camping.  Meet Sport Touring and ADV  riders who are passionate and serious about their riding. We ride a little further, a little faster and a little safer than typical motorcyclists. Once again, we anticipate the arrival of riders from places as far away as California, Florida, New York and everywhere in between. Heck, we might even have some Canadians join us again!

FerrySTOC started as an idea during a trip to the Blue Ridge Gathering in the Fall of ’09, an event on
the ST-owners.com calendar. (STOC=ST Owners Club is a free, internet based riding club.)  Why not have an event themed on the 4 rivers area and ride the ferries that cross those rivers?  And  ... just to play a little bit on the theme,  let’s have a Gothic based Tinkerbell fairy riding a motorcycle as our trademark. Why not bring more tourists into our local community? As time has passed, this event has grown a loyal following and expanded with suggested routes for the Adventure riders - riders who lust after gravel roads and back woods exploration in rural areas. With Land Between The Lakes  just across the river, this event brings the ADV riders together with long distance sport touring riders, all in the name of fun.

Thursday 18th:
Free BBQ with sides after 5 PM
Friday 19th:
Group ride in the AM, RTE somewhere along route,
Pie Ladies expected for 6 PM
Saturday 20th:
Group ride in the AM, RTE somewhere along route,
Burgers & Dogs at camp for dinner.

All riders are welcome, regardless of make or model. We do ask that you wear full safety gear, ride within your personal abilities and limits of safety, absolutely NO DRUGS and please, no drinks until kickstands are down for the day. It’s all in the name of fun and getting to visit new friends from around the country.

Contact Randy Collins, 731-695-8416 for more information.

Please RSVP if you plan to attend so that we can be prepared with a head count. Remember to buy local and support our Paris Landing Tourism League that is nice enough to host this event.
